Day 19: Un orage en Dordogne

Day 19, Monday 25 September

Excideuil to Sarlat-la-Canéda

66k

Feeling: fine, now I’ve dried out.

Short post today as it’s a poor internet connection at our B&B.

Just finished an excellent breakfast when a big thunderstorm arrived – lots of lightning, which is no fun on a bike. Delayed start, then we decided to go for it to try to cycle out of the rain band. Some hope. We got soaked – but no more lightning. Tomas and I decided the best strategy was to accept the rain and cycle hard. We didn’t really stop until we’d done 35k, by which time the sun was trying to shine.

The 30k this afternoon were in near perfect conditions up the Chironde valley and over the top of the hills and into Sarlat. We arrived sooner than expected,  so we had a beer.

So, no reflections on the countryside today – just hard cycling. Looking forward to supper.

Thanks for reading my blog and for all your comments.

P.S. That’s not a wig I’m wearing. The rain caused my hair to crinkle under the ribs of my helmet! Just to prove it here’s one of me a few hours later in the mediaeval centre of Sarlat:

Good day. Breakfast at ‘Home Sweet Home’ was perfect and the coffee lunch so too (no food). Yesterday it was all apples and today corn. I wonder what we will get tomorrow? Maybe some grapes. Anyway, a good fun day with Malcolm and a nice dinner in the centre of this medieval town. And thanks to James for lending me his bike!

Ha! The crinkly hair is cute. You could start a trend. I’m so proud of everything you are achieving and your upbeat perseverance in the face of the elements.
