Day 8: Chambre de Marguerite d’ Anjou

Day 8

Angers to Dampierre-sur-Loire

Feeling – a sense of history

Our room in our B&B tonight was used by Marguerite, Queen of England by marriage to King Henry VI, and daughter of Rene of Anjou. She was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 30 May 1445, and played a key role in the Wars of the Roses but was taken prisoner at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1475. Ransomed by Louis XI, she returned to France. Tonight, we occupy her room. This photo shows the spiral staircase used to climb up to the room:

A good ride today along the Loire in mainly sunny conditions. Stopped briefly in Saumur:

Where there were lots of umbrellas hanging over the road:

Fantastic historic day though finding the Loire was sometimes a bit like where’s Wally? Wierd cycle path took us uphill to an industrial zone. But we were savvy and rejoined the river finding a perfect picnic spot beside an Abbey founded in the C4th. Perfect cycling territory – spectacular Loire, beautiful historic villages, sun – and flat!!
